cPanel VPS Hosting: What the Licence Actually Costs

On a VPS, cPanel is a separate licence billed per account — often more than the server. The three honest routes, and Plesk from ₹143/mo with the licence included.

The question behind “cPanel VPS hosting” is almost always a pricing question, and the answer is one most listings avoid: on a VPS, cPanel is a separate licence you pay for on top of the server. It is not bundled, and it is not cheap.

Xenax does not sell a cPanel VPS bundle. What we sell is an unmanaged VPS from ₹599 a month that you can install any panel on, Plesk hosting from ₹143 if you want a licensed panel included, and cPanel shared hosting from ₹149 if cPanel specifically is what you are after and a VPS is not.

Why the licence is the real cost

cPanel changed its pricing model in 2019 from a flat per-server fee to per-account tiers. For a single small site on a VPS the licence can cost more than the VPS. That is the part that catches people who move from shared hosting expecting the panel to come with the machine.

So the arithmetic that matters is not “VPS price versus VPS price”. It is:

  • The server — from ₹599 a month for a Xenax KVM VPS.
  • The panel licence — billed separately by cPanel, priced by how many accounts you host.
  • Your time — installing and maintaining the panel, which is not zero even with a panel.

The three honest routes

You want cPanel and only cPanel

Then either buy the licence and install it on a VPS, or use cPanel shared hosting from ₹149 a month, where the licence is already covered. For a handful of sites, shared is usually the cheaper and quieter answer, and the reason to move to a VPS is resources, not the panel.

You want a licensed panel and do not mind which

Plesk does the same job — accounts, mail, databases, SSL, backups, one-click installs — with a different interface and, for small numbers of sites, a lower licence cost. Xenax Plesk plans start at ₹143 a month with the licence included, which removes the separate bill entirely.

You do not actually need a panel

Worth considering honestly. If you run one or two applications you deploy from git, a panel is an extra service to patch and an extra attack surface. A plain VPS with your stack installed directly is cheaper, faster and smaller. Free panels exist if you want the interface without the licence.

What to check before you buy

  • Is the licence included or billed separately? Ask for the number, not “cPanel available”.
  • How many accounts does the tier cover? The price steps up with account count, and reselling changes the tier.
  • Who patches the panel? On an unmanaged VPS that is you, and a control panel is exactly the kind of internet-facing software that needs patching promptly.
  • What are the actual resources? A panel itself consumes RAM. On a 1 GB VPS, cPanel plus MySQL leaves little for your site.

Where the server sits

Xenax runs one facility, in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, with NVMe storage and 100 Gbps DDoS protection. For Indian traffic that removes an international round trip; for traffic elsewhere the distance matters more than the panel does.

Questions people ask

Does a VPS come with cPanel?

Not by default, and not at Xenax. cPanel is a commercial licence billed separately from the server. Any provider advertising a cPanel VPS is bundling that licence into the price.

How much does cPanel cost on a VPS?

It is priced per account in tiers rather than as a flat server fee, so it depends on how many sites you host. For a single small site the licence frequently costs more than the VPS underneath it, which is why shared hosting often works out cheaper for one or two sites.

Is Plesk a good alternative to cPanel?

For most purposes yes — accounts, mail, databases, SSL and backups all work the same way, and the licence is cheaper at small scale. Xenax Plesk hosting starts at ₹143 a month with the licence included. The main reason to insist on cPanel is an existing workflow or a migration that expects it.

Can I run a VPS without any control panel?

Yes, and for a single application it is often the better choice: less software to patch, less RAM consumed, and a smaller attack surface. You manage the stack over SSH instead.
